The Best Time to Work Out (And Why You’re Overthinking It)

A gym member mid-workout at RE:GEN Fitness Club in Fort Collins, Colorado, demonstrating that any time of day is the best time to work out

There’s a question we hear all the time at RE:GEN.

“When is the best time to work out?”

People ask it like the answer is going to change everything. Like if they can just nail the perfect window, the results will finally click into place.

Here’s the real answer: the best time to work out is whenever you can actually do it.

That’s not a cop-out. That’s the truth.

The Optimization Trap

You’ve probably seen the content. Morning workouts spike cortisol in a good way. Evening workouts align with peak body temperature. Fasted training burns more fat. Fed training builds more muscle.

Some of that research is real. Most of it is irrelevant to your actual life.

Here’s what the research also shows: consistency beats timing every single time.

The person who trains at 6am three days a week for two years is going to run laps around the person who spent those two years waiting for the perfect schedule to open up.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

That said, timing isn’t completely irrelevant. There are a couple practical things to keep in mind.

If intense late-night training wrecks your sleep, that’s worth adjusting.

Poor sleep undermines everything else you’re doing in the gym, so if 9pm workouts leave you wired until midnight, earlier is better.

Meal timing matters a little too. Most people do better with a gap of an hour or two after a full meal.

If you’ve only had a snack, you can usually train sooner. Light carbs and some protein beforehand are fine for most people. A heavy meal right before a session is just asking for a rough hour.

The Mental Math That’s Holding You Back

When people ask about optimal training times, what they’re really asking is: “If I can’t do it perfectly, is it still worth doing?”

That’s the question underneath the question.

And the answer is yes. Obviously yes.

A noon workout is not less effective than a 7am workout because of the hour on the clock.

A Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday schedule is not inferior to Monday/Wednesday/Friday because it’s off the traditional pattern.

What makes a workout ineffective is not doing it.

What Actually Matters

When we build a member’s schedule at RE:GEN, we’re not asking when the science says they should train.

We’re asking when they can show up without it feeling like a fight.

Because a workout you dread scheduling is a workout you’ll eventually skip.

When training fits your real life, it stops being a negotiation. It becomes part of the week. And that’s when the actual results start stacking up.

The Bottom Line

Stop waiting for the perfect time. It doesn’t exist.

The gym at 5:30am works. The gym at noon works. The gym at 3pm works.

What doesn’t work is letting perfect be the enemy of consistent.

Figure out when you can show up, and show up there. Every week. Over and over.

That’s the formula. That’s always been the formula.
