One morning in the next week or two, the house is going to go quiet at 8:15 for the first time since May.
You’ve already got a plan for that hour. You’ve been saying it since June.
Drop them off, go straight to the gym.
You haven’t been since school got out last May, but that’s okay, the summer was busy. You’ll have plenty of time to get back to it now that school’s starting again.
Then it goes like this.
The dentist can only take you at 10. The work that piled up over the summer has to land somewhere. Groceries are easier now.
Practice pickup is 4:30, so you leave at 4:15, so the afternoon’s shorter than the calendar makes it look.
None of it’s dramatic. Nothing you’d ever call a reason to skip the gym.
The hour was just open, and open hours get taken.
By the end of the month you’ve been twice.
By the end of October it isn’t really a plan anymore. It’s a thing you meant to do.
Your kids went every day.
Including the mornings they didn’t want to and told you so the whole way there. They wanted it less than you do. They went anyway.
Their year got decided back in August. What they’d learn, what time they had to be there, and who’d notice if the seat stayed empty.
Nobody decided yours.
So the house goes quiet, the hour’s finally yours, and not one thing about it has been settled.
That gap was never about wanting it badly enough.
