It’s five o’clock. You close the laptop.
You have been making decisions since seven this morning. Now there is one more.
Do you train tonight, or not.
Underneath that one sit about fifteen more. Which exercises. How many sets. How much weight. What to do instead of the movement that bothered your shoulder last time.
You know you should be lifting. You have known for a while.
The knowing was never the problem.
The problem is that the decision shows up at the exact moment you have the least left to make it with. And skipping is the only thing on today’s list that nobody will notice.
So it gets skipped. Then it gets skipped again.
Then you start telling yourself you have a discipline problem.
After a day like that, willpower was never going to be the thing that saved the workout. What saves it is having decided days earlier, and having somebody who expects you.
That is a solvable problem.
It is just not solvable at five o’clock.
