The gym requires something practice never did

CrossFit training with wall ball

There’s a version of you that trained four days a week without ever deciding to.

Practice was at 3:15. Lifting was Tuesday and Thursday. Somebody handed you the program, somebody counted your reps, and somebody said something the next day when you weren’t there.

You were in the best shape of your life and you barely thought about it.

Then it ended. Quietly, most of the time. There was a last season, and then there wasn’t a next one, and nobody sat you down to explain what you’d just lost.

For a while it didn’t matter. You were 24. You played pickup, you skied, you stayed busy, and your body did what you asked of it.

Somewhere in your 30s the math caught up.

I’ve been active this whole time. I haven’t actually trained in years.

So you tried. January, probably. A few good weeks, then a work trip, then a Saturday you meant to go and didn’t.

Maybe a group class, because at least a class has a time and somebody at the front of the room.

When that fell apart too, you landed on the explanation that had been sitting there the whole time.

I’m just older now.

Here’s what’s actually going on, and it’s a smaller problem than the one you’ve been carrying.

What made you consistent was a schedule you didn’t get a vote on and a room full of people who noticed when you weren’t in it. Your discipline got the credit for it.

You still have the discipline. You lost the structure, and nobody ever told you that was the part that mattered.

That part is fixable.
